𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫:

Professor Jin Sato is a Professor of Development Studies at the Institute of Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo. His research focuses on the politics of natural resources and foreign aid in Southeast Asia.

His recent publication includes “The Semantics of Development: Exploring ‘Untranslatable’ Ideas Through Japan” (co-edited with Kim Soyeaun, Springer Nature, 2023). His upcoming book, Sustainability Inverted, will be published by MIT Press.

He has served as a visiting professor at Columbia University’s Climate School (2024–2025) and at Princeton University’s School of Public Policy (2016–2020). He is a former Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Asian Studies (Cambridge University Press) and a past president of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID). He received the Japan Academy Medal in 2013.

He holds a Master of Public Policy from the Kennedy School at Harvard University and a PhD in International Relations from the University of Tokyo.
