Professor Jin Sato is a Professor of Development Studies at the Institute of Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo. His research focuses on the politics of natural resources and foreign aid in Southeast Asia.
His recent publication includes โThe Semantics of Development: Exploring ‘Untranslatable’ Ideas Through Japanโ (co-edited with Kim Soyeaun, Springer Nature, 2023). His upcoming book, Sustainability Inverted, will be published by MIT Press.
He has served as a visiting professor at Columbia Universityโs Climate School (2024โ2025) and at Princeton Universityโs School of Public Policy (2016โ2020). He is a former Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Asian Studies (Cambridge University Press) and a past president of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID). He received the Japan Academy Medal in 2013.
He holds a Master of Public Policy from the Kennedy School at Harvard University and a PhD in International Relations from the University of Tokyo.
